Cannizaro House
Above: Cannizaro House
Since 1705 when Cannizaro House was built as a country retreat for wealthy Londoners, the beautiful mansion has played host to an impressive list of residents and visitors - Viscounts, Duchesses and Maharajas have all resided in the stunning property, and the Duke of Wellington once enjoyed the fabulous views over Cannizaro Park and Wimbledon Common. After such a regal line-up, it seemed appropriate that local magazine royalty sample the delights of Cannizaro's superb restaurant.
The property has operated as a hotel since 1987, and recently benefited from a little refurbishment from new owners Bridgehouse Hotels. The aim was to appeal to outside visitors, as well as guests of the hotel, and the result is a modern bar area in the lobby featuring a good selection of drinks, and an elegant dining room with stunning views over the glorious grounds beyond.
Standards are high, in both décor and cuisine, and ingredients are organic, seasonal, and sourced locally where possible. The menu delivers a selection of traditional dishes with global influences - my starter of spice-crusted scallops was a great example of lovely fresh produce, given an exotic edge with a cauliflower puree and beignet, and mild curry oil. The fusion of eastern and British flavours was repeatedin new season rump of lamb, which was perfect with a piquant brinjal pickle and teeny dollops of cool minty raita. Sea bass was so fresh it needed only broad beans, spring peas and trompettes to accompany it. Desserts maintained high standards, and completed a dining experience fit for a queen!
