Tucked away between Putney and Wandsworth bridges in the heart of a desirable riverside development, Riverpoint’s location surely means it has it made. The owner of two other local establishments (Konnigans and Global on Old York Road) snapped up the premises three months ago promising a mix of Mediterranean and English food.

The restaurant is curved, feeling rather like the bridge of a ship, with fantastic views of the river and pleasant contemporary decor. Most importantly, there are tables outside on a large pontoon almost over the river. By fluke we visited at high tide on a late summer evening and, as there was a large party celebrating upstairs, opted for a table outside.

The staff were helpful and our starters came quickly – buffalo mozzarella with figs on rocket, mint and red basil for me. There was plenty of greenery, but not a huge amount of mozzarella and my friend’s Maryland crab cakes with tarragon butter sauce were breaded and possibly deep fried – not how I had them in Maryland, but he seemed satisfied.

Tempted by the intriguingly named monkfish jaipur (with mango chutney and naan), I eventually settled on seared cod fillet with a pleasant herb risotto and lobster velouté. The meat eater picked crusted rump of lamb with summer vegetable and rosemary jus, which didn’t come medium rare as requested but at least the side order of mash was as desired. The wine list is extensive and a light glass of rose accompanied my meal, while my friend chose the Côte du Rhône, which mellowed to a delicious flavour once allowed to breath. Deserts of sticky toffee pudding and melting chocolate fondant arrived swiftly.

With a lunch menu offering a meal for £7, I have a feeling this river-side spot will suit al fresco eating well into the autumn.

Meal for two £50 plus wine
